A Bavarian Winter

What a busy day! Tried getting up early and was mostly sort of kind of successful and heading off to the city of Würzburg. We noticed on our way to the train station an increasing amount of cold  fluffy white stuff on the ground. Now being from California I was quite unsure what this cold stuff was! But on the train ride we noticed more and more of it covering the buildings and fields, and we even saw it falling down from the sky in an increasing fashion. We made a day trip from Nuremberg to Würzburg. What a neat city. All I have is one word. Snow! Lots of snow! We didn’t get to do much but we did of course get to visit the Christmas market. It wasn’t huge, but it was nice. We also went to tour the grand Residenz – a UNESCO world heritage site, palatial home that took 60 years to construct for Prince-Bishop of Würzburg Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn in the early 1700’s. Everybody’s heard of him right!? I was wondering how it could possibly take so long to build, but once we got in it was quite easy to see how it could take so long. Absolutely stunning design and artwork, with architects and artists brought in from around Germany and Italy. Unfortunately taking photos on the inside of the palace was strictly prohibited, but you can just web search something like “wurzburg palace” in images. Also during WW2, the palace was very severely damaged in major firebombing campaigns by the Allies and much had to be reconstructed. (With the help of American soldiers who took the city!) It was amazing for almost all the day it was just a constant and heavy flurry of snow! Something I was hoping at least would happen once, a nice snow day! Although the local Bavarians were far more casual about a snowfall of this scale.

After a bit of walking around for some more sights around the city we took the train to the city of Bamberg which is a bit closer to Nuremberg. We got to walk around for a bit and visit the neat Christmas Market there. After that we walked to see the old city hall, a unique and interesting old style building on a bridge over the Regnitz river, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site as is much of the old town. And then went to see the ol’ Cathedral.
