A Sunday In Goslar

Well it was an alright day, nothing terribly exciting, but a few neat surprises abound. It started with a trip to the “Klusfelsen” (Klus cliffs) and the “Kluskapelle” (Klus chapel) which is a large and unique 110 million year old rock formation, and at the top, a small chapel was carved in 1167 with a little bridge to it.

Next was the Goslar Zwinger, back in town. I haven’t really been able to find out a good translation for Zwinger, as the city of Dresden’s Zwinger is a beautiful palace, but Goslar’s Zwinger, is little more than an old stone tower, which is now a museum full of medieval artifacts. It’s a very hands on museum, complete with swords, shields, pieces of armor, and a massive and insanely heavy full chain mail shirt made the medieval way, old caplock rifles you can hold (probably newer replicas), old medieval shackles, and punishment/shame masks you can put on etc…

Then it was off to the Kaiserpfalz (Imperial Palace) of Goslar, and residence of the imperial family, today it is a museum, though it has changed much and has been heavily renovated. One end is the the attached Chapel of of St. Ulrich, which is little more than a tomb for Ulrich III… or at least his heart. Though the great hall is pretty incredible.

Then was a bit more of a walk around the old town and market place… with a very… interesting statue on a restaurant/hotel from around 1494 in the square. Nearby is the “Large Holy Cross” a former hospital run by monks in the middle ages, is now a shopping plaza, for handmade decor items, and in the main building is a row of teeny tiny rooms, with teeny tiny doors each with a craftsman in their teeny tiny shop making goods, whether it was jewelry or clothing or wood carving, glass making etc…

After that was was a long trip west and up hill, a steep hike up the rocky hills west of Goslar through a beautiful forest to get to the top for the “Steinberg Turm” (Stonerock Tower)… bit of redundancy in that name I think. It’s a neat tower that sits at the tip of the hill overlooking Goslar, built in 1888. Annoyingly, there’s a bunch of really tall trees that almost completely obscure the view of Goslar, but you can see the neighborhoods outside the old town, and the hills and other surrounding landscape.

The “Breite Tor” or the Broad Gate, one of the old gatehouses into old town Goslar, loaded with arrow slits. Much of the old walls are long gone.

The chapel on top across a little wooden bridge.

The door was completely sealed, I didn’t see anyway it could be opened at all.

They even had a couple samurai helmets. There was another display of ’em next to this one.

Overlooking the city from the top.

A WW 1/2 memorial. The statue of a solder for WW1, and the wrath in front for WW2.

The Imperial Palace.
IMG_6114
Guessing this is a concentration camp prisoner, there were a few other memorials next to the palace.

Part of the museum on the first floor.

Ulrich III’s heart lies in a gold can in here, though it is probably nothing more than dust by now. There is also a dog at his feet if you look closely.

The incredibly beautiful mural hall.

Oh look! What a near and over 500 year old bar and restaurant/hotel!

…and there’s a statue of a guy shitting out coins. Under the left most figure in the image above. It’s nicknamed the “Dukatenshcheißer” Or “Ducat shitter” Ducats were a coin in Europe during the middle ages.

The Large Holy Cross handcraft shops.

More shops in the courtyard of the former hospital, on the left, middle, and another left off-camera, along with what’s in the main room.

The doors were about a foot and a half shorter than me.

A weeeirrdd figure of a head. Heh this reminds me, at the Large Holy Cross handcraft hospital thing, I saw a guy with ear jewelry, but this wasn’t a ring, or gauge, it was just a straight up screw through his ear lobe.

The Neuerwerk Kirche, closed for most of the day. One picture taken in the morning.

This picture taken in the evening.

Some neat homely architecture.
IMG_6178
Some kind of memorial, the script was so worn and faded I could barely read it.
IMG_6179
The Stonerock Castle. It’s nothing more than a tower with stairs that go to the top.
IMG_6181
But it sure gives nice views!

A Schutzhütte (Protection/shelter hut) maybe for bad weather? Which was locked, and I also saw no way it could be opened.

Also saw this badboy in a home driveway on the way up the hill. The text on the sticker/decal on the back says “Problem Killer”.
