Hamburg…ers

Well it was a rough day which I shall make up for tomorrow. My feet are really feeling the pain.

Anyways, I got a lot of shopping done which was nice.

Well that about sums the day up.

Not really.

Or is it really?

No, it isn’t, it goes further,

So the first thing I did, which was supposed to be a lot sooner was checking out a cool old Russian cold war era submarine, U-434, a huge ‘Untersee Boot’. Then did a long walk down a major shopping and restaurant district, most of which all carry the same exact wares, The street next to the shopping district is St. Pauli’s, but I can’t find the name of the waterfont street. It was a long walk with rally neat site, including the ‘Alter Elbtunnel’. It is a huge pit hidden inside a large, though inconspicuous building with little signage that takes you deep under the Elbe River to the other side of the harbor, it looks cool, and is over 100 years old.

Next was the nearby St. Michaelis Church, a towering spire above a large church make for a nice sight. What’s even cooler is above the main door is a large bronze (green now) Archangel Michael standing victoriously on top of a fallen demon. Visitors can enter the church, very majestic with a colossal pipe organ, they can take an elevator to the top of te tower, and enter the crypt below. Which was not as exciting as I thought. But still cool. It was built in the 1700s, burnt down completely in the 1800s and was rebuilt. It burnt down completely again in the 1800s and was rebuilt in the 1900s. And was burnt down completely during WW2. No, just kidding, but it was fairly heavily damaged in WW2, and underwent rebuiding and restorations for decades. With it’s current track record God will be throwing at lightning bolt at it any time now. I hope the Feuerwehr (fire department) is ready.

Near the church is a huge statue of Otto von Bismarck, first Reichschancellor of Gemany I think in 1903. A badass statue of a man revered by Germans.

Next was lots of walking and shopping around the gorgeous townhall, with souvenir stores with much much cheaper goods than was on the river front, and mostly the same stuff!

And that’s the end of that chapter! th

  1. I would love to walk the tunnel under the Elbe River! What a city with an old Russian sub, a square rugger, Bismark statue, churches, crypt, etc. Glad you got to some shopping, too. Good talking with you yesterday.
