Oktoberfest!

Today was the day, and one of the best days I’ve ever had. Die Wiesn, or Festwiesn as it is called by the locals, is absolutely incredible, the parties, foods, rides and atmosphere. Its origins as the wedding between Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese in October in 1810, unknown to many. Not a lot to say other than having a drink… Surrrprrisseee!!! And some chicken and a giant pretzel. I went on lots of the rides and attractions, and feasted on the ever-present scent of cinammon and sugar in the air. Many don’t know as I did not myself, it has many many rides like any carnival, and there are 14 main beer ‘tents’. They are massive permanent structures, some of which hold 6,000+ people, one up to 10,000. They each have different names and themes and serve different kinds of drinks and foods. One specializes in fish, one in ox meat, one in chicken, etc… They are run by different families, companies or groups. And some cater to different types of people, such as singles, families, local celebrities, parties, and the like. I got there early in the morning around 9, as thats when few people are there on weekdays. Don’t even try to get a tent on weekends, because the lines are massive by 7:30am… and who even wants to drink then? But the tents don’t open till later though. Getting in a tent in the afternoon or later is virtually impossible unless you have a reservation from like February. Once you’re in you can stay as long as you like so there is very little seat turn over. I got in the brand-new-this-year Marstall tent, next to a friendly older couple from Heidelberg, one of my future stops, which were fun to try my German on. Here are some videos, but I will let the pictures do the rest of the talking.
