Well we spent our last full day visiting the last Christmas Market of the trip. This time it was to the very very nearby town of Fürth, which borders with Nuremberg. We walked around the neat market which was also Medieval Themed, like the one in Esslingen some days ago.
Back in Nuremberg there was another final walk around the main market, which on the weekend is so overwhelmingly crowded even walking around is such a pain.
After that, I went around town on my own for lots of last minute shopping, and signed up for an underground tour – under the Nuremberg castle is a large underground tunnel and chamber system, which was used in Medieval Times to keep beer cool!
But this tour was regarding the tunnel’s use as a safe place to store art during World War 2. As the city was bombed into ruin, much of the town’s art – statues, paintings, and much more was placed in these tunnels to keep them safe from the Allied bombing raids. It was not used to store mass looted art, it was almost entirely art made in Nuremberg over the last several centuries. In the tunnels, there was many signboards all over depicting what art was stored and where. The 2014 film, Monuments Men depicts the rescuing of art at the end of WW2, though that was primarily in a different bunker.
Sadly, here are the last post of pictures of this trip!
Until next time!
