A new day, a new city. This time to the second biggest city in Austria, Graz, in the state of Styria! (Pronounced Grahts) It is near the border with Slovenia.
We di a fairly simple walk around the trip, spending most of our time walking up the famous and iconic Graz clock tower, situated on a large mountainous hill in the middle of town. I could find very very little info about the clock tower, other than that it was originally built back in the 1300’s, and upgraded into a clocktower in the 1500’s. And back during Napoleon’s occupation of Austria, he had threatened to destroy the town landmark, but only spared it after the townsfolk paid a ransom for it and other buildings.
Under the mountain, slave labor was used to carve out shelters for the townsfolk, to protect against Allied bombing raids. Now you can easily visit one of the tunnels, and you can either talk up winding roads, taking a neat modern elevator that speeds up, or take the scenic “Schlossbergbhan” – Castle Mountain Train, a funicular that goes up the mountain side which gives a great view of the city.
Back in town was a lovely Christmas Market in the central town square, as well as a fewer smaller ones a short walk away.
Just outside of town is the childhood home of the legndary actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, which has since been converted into a museum, however, unfortunately, we were not able to make it.
As usual, here is a link to the images:
