One Tall Church

(Trip date: 11/27/2023) Sadly the Christmas Market in Augsburg was not possible for us to visit as it opened later in the evening, after we would be gone. But we did a little more touring around the city and came to see the Augsburg Cathedral. Per Wikipedia:

The Cathedral of Augsburg (German: Dom Mariä Heimsuchung) is a Catholic cathedral in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, founded in the 11th century in Romanesque style, but with 14th-century Gothic additions. Together with the Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra, it is one of the city’s main attractions. It measures 113 x 40 m, and its towers are 62 m high. It is dedicated to the Visitation of Virgin Mary.

After we finished our time in Augsburg, we made our next stop westward bound, to the city of Ulm. If you’ve ever heard of Ulm, it is probably because of the Lutheran cathedral in the center of the old town. Built in 1377 (started), and at 161.53 meters / 530 feet) This cathedral happens to be the tallest church in the world.

It also has an absolutely magnificent Christmas market out front, in terms of variety of things for sale, and decorations and theming.

Augsburg Cathedral.
The colossal Ulm Cathedral! It’s hard to even see it all up front.
Sadly it was partially covered in scaffolding for renovations.
Carvings in the choir seats.
There was a booth, literally with a live local radio broadcast right in the market. Nice and comfy in there, while it was cold and raining outside the whole time.
