Rainy Castra Regina

(City Date: 11/24/2023) Another interesting day! Unfortunately due to heavy rains which can cause high river levels and flooding, the ship was unable to make port in the planned destination stop of Regensburg. So we docked about 30 minutes outside of town, and took a bus in. Also unfortunately it rained for most of our visit, not a heavy rain, but just enough to make everything uncomfortably wet! Ironically Regen is the German word for rain, however Regen in Regensburg has a different meaning – Royal Castle / Castra Regina, in it’s old Latin/Roman name.) It was a nice and informative tour, ending in one of the prettiest Christmas Markets we’ve yet visited! A ‘private’ market, that (unlike most others) one must pay to get in to. This market was on the park-grounds of the famous privately owned (and still lived in) Palace of Thurn und Taxis. (See my other post here to learn more about this incredible palace as well as more info about Regensburg: https://jonsjourneythroughgermany.com/2018/10/02/thurn-und-taxis/ )

In addition to this wonderful city, we and a few other guests were invited to sit and dine personally with the captain of the ship, Captain Cretunau, from Romania!

Bavarian day in the restaurant!
A neat medieval tower with an interesting secret. It is 500+ years old. But what’s behind the top 4 darkened windows? Nothing but iron sheets. The top 4 floors have never contained anything, or ever had any purpose. They were built purely as a show of wealth.
Entrance to the Christmas Market in the palace park!
Mom feeding the goats!
Hallway into the inner courtyard. Again, this is a privately owned palace which a family still lives in, full or part time.
