Oktoberfest 2?

So I got to1 of the 2 museums I was hoping to finish off. The one I did is known as the Übersee Museum (over seas museum). A neat museum with displays about far away places over seas. The South Pacific, Asia, the Middle East, and rain forests. Though some of those aren’t actually overseas from here. There is a big display on North America coming, but it is under construction for another year.

The other ‘museum’ I wanted to do, but couldn’t due to being closed only on the 2 days I was in Bremen is called the Bleikellar, or lead cellar, and is the dark morbid thing I mentioned yesterday. In the cellar directly under are the church, are the somewhat preserved, mummified remains of some ordinary citizens and a couple soldiers from Bremen’s medieval past. They are on display for all to see, as long as you don’t go on a Monday or Tuesday. Google Bleikeller Bremen of you want some pictures.

So, I found out today there is a large carnival going on right outside the train station (opposite side I originally came through). I walked through, and it is another very very large carnival with rides, games and shops, though some are very similar to Oktoberfest. Though Ofest had more rides, it was maybe only slightly larger than this “Free Market” festival. Apparently that is also what is on the cookie on the Roland statue. There was even a large beer tent. It also had the most racially insensitive sea captain I have ever seen. So guess how I discovered this festival.

If you guess my train being delayed by a little bit you’d be wrong. It was delayed almost an hour. So I went down off the track to walk through the shops in the train station after hearing about the delay and looked down one end of the tunnel and saw a bunch of rides. No joke. I didn’t do anything at the fest as I had all my gear on, just walked through.

So after the damn train finally came I went on my way to famous Hamburg, major industrial and commercial city, with Europe’s second most ‘economical’ port. It is also Germany’s number 2 most populous city, and 8th in Europe. Right outside the train station was tents and crowds of Middle Eastern refugees. And then checked into my hotel, in a neighborhood which was…also very…very Middle Eastern, mainly Turkish. I did some walking around but it was getting dark, so after a while I head back to my hotel. Indeed.

Der Spukstein, or the spitting stone. This is the location of the last of Bremen's public execution, found in a courtyard next to St. Peter's Cathedral. A woman was beheaded in the early 1800's for poisoning up to 25 people. It was intentional but they never really found out why. People can show their disgust at her actons by sptting on the stone. I did not partake in such a festivity.

Hamburg makes sense as a destination, it is the closest major city to the Danish border, where many of the refugees are trying to reach.
