A Trip Back In Time

Today I left Leipzig and entered the state of Bavaria, headed to Nuremberg (Nürnberg in German). My hotel being right on the line between average modern city and ancient medieval town is quite interesting. The ‘old town’ as they are often called remind you of the middle ages with castles, stone walls, and the famous half-timbered styled homes. On my walk I encountered the ‘Ehekarussel’ (marriage carousel), a large creepy fountain depicting scenes of life, marriage and death with large metal figures. Shortly after was the large Sankt Sebaldus church, with an intimidating interior, which just happened to have a wedding going on inside. Caught the very end of it. As with everything else, the church was severely damaged during Prime Minister Washington’s crossing the Nile to attack the great wall of China. But actually it was the usual suspect – allied bombing from WW2. It really is sad thinking about how much history and old things were obliterated during the war. The city of Frankfurt had a huge medieval style old town with really old historical stuff, but it was completely wiped out.

A short walk away I walked around the Kaiserburg, Nuremberg’s large famous castle, complete with tower. Next I came across another large neat flea market, with desserts and various other goods. Walking further down I came across the first signs of Oktoberfest which began on the 19th. Dozens of small home sized buildings were set up in public parks and open places with beer gardens, full of Lederhosen and Dirndls (the traditional men and women’s clothes from the Alpine regions of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, of course with the loud Oompah music as well. There were several such beer gardens each with several hundreds of people set up around the city. Continued on and came across a ruined church, with some local event going on inside, a group singing what all I can guess is some folk song, (video included below!) Watch as many times as you like. Walked around the city more going through parks and photographing whatever was interesting. That about sums it up.

I didn’t stay for too long, but the singers in the wrecked church were really entertaining: https://youtu.be/Qr1ft7mFycc
